Resumen

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the correlation between math anxiety and mathematical thinking levels, as well as math anxiety and covariational reasoning levels in first course engineering students. To accomplish this objective two previously designed instruments ere applied to 215 volunteer students from Facultad de Ingeniería of the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua; likewise the results from the EXANI-II admission test were taken into account. The approach of this research was non-experimental, quantitative and transversal. It was determined that participants presented an average math anxiety level, outstanding mathematical thinking level and a gross coordination of values covariational reasoning. Also, high mathematical thinking-high covariational reasoning students presented lower math anxiety levels; low mathematical thinking-low covariational reasoning students presented higher levels of math anxiety. The relevance of this investigation lies in the study of the research variables in a seldom studied context, engineering college students. This approach allows for a better context diagnosis of first year engineering students
