Resumen
Concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere have significantly increased from the pre-industrial age to our times. Moreover, such concentrations are expected to double with respect to the current concentrations in the next century. Although previous research has studied about the physiological responses of plants with the C3 photosynthetic pathway, little is known about the responses of C4 plants under enriched CO2 environments. This study evaluated physiological responses of Bouteloua gracilis under elevated concentrations of CO2. B. gracilis is a species with the C4 photosynthetic pathway, which is native and plays a key role for the grazing of cattle and the feeding of wildlife in the Chihuahuan Desert. Concentrations of 800 μmol mol-1, 500 μmol mol-1 of CO2 were maintained in two greenhouses built to scale. A third greenhouse was maintained at environmental concentrations (380 μmol mol-1) and served as control. During nine weeks, both physiological and morphological plant responses were measured on the species. In general, the concentrations applied seem not to have a significant effect (p>0.05) in the performance of the species; except for the variable plant height, which resulted with the highest values in the environment concentrated at 800 μmol mol-1 (p<0.05). In addition, the plants growing under the environment concentrated at 800 μmol mol-1 showed precocity. The treatments applied did not show significant positive effects (p>0.05) on the transpiration and dry mass production of B. gracilis. It is recommended to rise the concentration of this gas at levels higher than 800 μmol mol-1 to determine if there exist positive effects.
