Resumen

The wolfgrass (Muhlenbergia phleoides) is a native grass of the state of Chihuahua of forage importance. However, to date the diversity of this species in forage attributes and the potential to generate varieties of it is unknown. Therefore, the objective was to analyze the morphological and nutritional variability of 30 populations of wolfgrass from the state of Chihuahua. The plants were evaluated ex situ in an agricultural area of the "El Vallecillo" under temporary conditions. The characterization was carried out through quantitative and qualitative variables. The data was analyzed with different multivariate techniques. By means of hierarchical cluster analysis, five groups of populations were identified, which were significantly different from each other (p <0.05) according to the multivariate analysis of variance. Variability was obtained and populations with high potential for forage and seed production were differentiated, where Group 1 was outstanding for these characteristics. Group 1 (G1) was characterized for including populations with greater forage height (FH), plant height (PH), stem density (SD), leaf length (LL), tiller diameter (TD), yield of forage (YF), leaf-stem ratio (L-SR) and crude protein (CP). In the G2, populations with high contents of acid detergent lignin (ADL) and crude fiber (CF) were distributed, but with low PC values. In the G3, populations with medium values were integrated, with the exception of leaf width (LW) that presented the highest values. The G4 grouped populations of low PH, TD, L-SR, and ADL. Finally, the G5 integrated populations with the lowest values in FH, PH, leaf length (LL), TD and FY. The populations of G1 (6, 7, 26 and 30) are native to the municipalities of Riva Palacios, Balleza and Guachochi, which may become new varieties of wolfgrass in the future.
