Resumen
The objective was to determine the effect of ferulic acid (FA) on ruminal pH, DMI, apparent digestibility and nutrient duodenal flow in finishing heifers. Ten Hereford × Angus crossbreed heifers (445.8 ± 57.6 kg) cannulated on rumen and duodenum were used. Data was analyzed in a 5 × 5 latin square design repeated in line (nutrient duodenal flow did not considered repetition), the design considered the effect of 5 periods and 5 treatments. Treatments were: Basal diet + 0 (FA0; Control), 3.5 (FA3.5), 7 (FA7), 10.5 (FA10.5) y 14 (FA14) mg/kg of BW of FA. Ferulic acid linearly increased (P < 0.01) ruminal pH (FA0: 6.45; FA3.5: 6.56; FA7: 6.63; FA10.5: 6.62; FA14: 6.70), and had a cuadratic effect (P < 0.05) on DMI (FA0: 10.59; FA3.5: 11.34; FA7: 12.42; FA10.5: 11.31; FA14: 10.81 kg/d) and on digestible dry matter intake (FA0: 8.32; FA3.5: 8.97; FA7: 9.74; FA10.5: 8.50; FA14: 8.32 kg/d). Apparent digestibility decreased (P < 0.05) for FA10.5 treatment. Nutrient duodenal flow was not different (P > 0.05) among treatments. Becasue an increase in ruminal pH, DMI and digestible dry matter intake without affectig apparent digestibilty, FA a dose between 3.5 - 7 mg/kg of BW is recomended.
