Resumen

This paper uses the studies carried out by American linguist Walter J. Ong and experts in philology and literature such as Eric Havelock to analyze two literary works taking orality as the viewpoint. The two works analyzed here are “La feria” by Juan José Arreola and “Celtic Twilight” by William Butler Yeats. Both Arreola and Yeats used the local people’s voice to bring the characters from their novel and short stories anthology to life. The main purpose of this paper is to exemplify in the works previously mentioned the presence of orality in literature, and to highlight the role this one plays in preserving particular uses of a language at a specific moment in the history of a country or region in particular.
