Resumen
The objective was to evaluate the bactericidal action of several nitro compounds to eliminate pathogens in poultry litter. Composting is effective to eliminate harmful pathogens, but there is a risk of nitrogen loss such as ammonia, which limits its use as a feed for ruminants. Ethyl nitroacetate (ENA), 3-nitropropionate (3NPA), ethyl 2-nitropropionate (E2NPA) and nitroethane (NE) were used to treat one-year-old poultry litter not treated with antibiotics. The poultry litter was distributed in tubes and inoculated with 3.0 log10 CFU g-1 Salmonella thyphimurium (STNN) resistant to novobiacin and naladixic acid and incubated at 37 ° C for 6 days and subsequently at 50 °C for 3 days. Only buffer was added to the control. Samples collected at 3, 6 and 9 hours were seeded in 3M Petri-film for the count of Escherichia coli / total coliforms and in Petri dishes with brilliant green agar for enumeration of STNN. Ammonia, uric acid and urea were measured colorimetrically. A random statistical analysis was used. A main effect existed due to the days of incubation, which reflects an effect of composting, both in STNN and in E. coli. The populations decreased to undetectable levels by day 9. No interactions were observed between the treatment and the incubation day for STNN or E. coli. The main effects of the treatment were observed in the accumulations of ammonia and the degradation of uric acid (P <0.05). Results suggest that nitro-treatment can help to preserve uric acid in the composted poultry litter, without effect on E. coli counts.
