Resumen

Natal grass is an invasive species on grasslands that can affect quality and quantity of the ecosystem services. The objective of this study was to evaluate possible changes on the structure and function of grasslands invaded with Natal grass. Cover, organic matter content in soil, stability and compaction of soil were sampled on grasslands sites with 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of invasion with Natal grass. At each site and among sites, alpha and beta indexes were calculated. The species diversity showed a decline as time of invasion increased (R2 = 0.79). Although, there were differences (P≤ 0.05) among sites on organic matter content and soil stability and compaction, there is not a clear tendency due to invasion time. Similarity indexes values were decreasing as invasion time increased when compared with site 0. The results indicate changes on the vegetation structure due to invasion time of natal grass; however, variables related with ecosystem functionality did not show the same tendency. Both, alpha and beta indexes represent a base line for monitoring Natal grass invasions.
