Resumen

The capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from exhaust gas streams is of paramount importance to mitigate global warming. Despite several existing technologies to capture CO2, most of them are not suitable to be used on a large scale. Mixed oxides are strong candidates for CO2 capture at high temperatures (600-800 °C). CO2 is combined with oxides to form carbonates and these oxides, when regenerated, release a high purity CO2 flow. Selection criteria for potential oxides to be used as absorbents, among others, are; the ability to capture CO2, high thermal stability, low regeneration temperature, low cost and adequate structural properties. The study is aimed to describe a new soft-chemistry synthesis method of sodium zirconate (Na2ZrO3) through a sol-gel technique that can be used to capture CO2 in a post-combustion process at industrial scale. This work shows Na2ZrO3 as a potential material for CO2 capture, resulting in high CO2 absorption and in a less expensive synthesis method. Results found in the evaluation of the material were highly favorable, obtaining a CO2 absorption of 22 wt%, which approximately represents 93 % of its theoretical capacity and high thermal stability under a multi-cycle absorption/desorption operation. A 37 % CO2 reduction was achieved during complete combustion of sawdust under a post-combustion process
