Resumen
Abstract Waste water treatment from mining operations requires technology that adapts to the geographic and environmental conditions of the mining site. To design this technology it is important to consider the quality of the water that is discharged both before and after the technology, this latter should comply with the national regulations. We designed and evaluated two filters to remove suspended solids of waste water from mining operations in the municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo, Chihuahua. One filters contained gravel and pine litter (Filter 1), and other filter contained gravel, pine litter, and sand (Filter 2); these materials were previously collected in the nearby of the mine site. Waste water from the drill pad process a blank sample (distillated water), and the concentrations (% v/v) to determine remotion for the filters were characterized. The estimated parameters were pH, total solid dissolved (TSD), electric conductivity (EC), and total solid suspended (TSS). To measure TSD, TB, pH and CE we used the Hanna Combo pH and EC waterproof potentiometer. To determine TB the portable microprocessor turbiditymeter (Hanna Instruments HI93703) was used. The TSD were determined according to the Mexican norm (NMX-AA-034-SCFI-2001). To compare the two filters, an ANOVA and correlation were performed using the statistical program SAS 9. Results showed that the filters removed solids. Filter 1 has mainly chemical removal properties, as determined by pH, TDS and EC. Meanwhile, Filter 2 has greater removal properties in terms of TB and TSS. The results may be due to the composition of each filter. These results are attributed to the arrangement of the material within the filters. Thus, we can conclude that filters that contains material nearby the mine site would be an option to treat waste water from drill pad activities.
