Resumen

Induction of intraspecific variability represents an alternative for breeding of grasses. The objective of this study was to characterize Natal grass and to induce variability through mutagenesis with gamma radiation, to modify its morphology and nutritional value. The investigation consisted of three studies conducted under field, greenhouse and laboratory conditions. In the first study, wild populations of natal grass in the state of Chihuahua were morphologically characterized. The second study consisted of determining the optimal dose of gamma radiation in the natal grass seed. Finally, the irradiated seeds were sown to evaluate the variability in first generation mutants (M1). The data was analyzed with the SAS program through multivariate and univariate analyzes. The natal grass did not show morphological variability among populations of the state of Chihuahua. The mean lethal dose (LD50) was at 250 Gy with 60CO gamma radiation. The plants developed from irradiated seeds presented morphological and nutritional characteristics different from the wild populations of the state of Chihuahua. The results of these studies can contribute to increase the probability of utilization of the natal grass through the breeding of new genetic material of agronomic interest.
